There are three main considerations in putting a non-OEM caliper onto the OEM rotors:

- the friction face width of the rotor has to match the radial depth of the pads. Racing and aftermarket BBK pads usually range from 49 to 53 mm radial depth. Putting an ST40/60 on a stock E92 M3 front rotor will only work if the rotor annulus is the same width as the pads.

- the setback of the rotor has to be such that a caliper bracket can be made that will actually fit. The setback will also determine if the caliper hits the inside of the rim.

- the rotor minimum thickness has to be sufficient that the pistons won't fall out of their bores when the pads are worn out

From an engineering standpoint, this is not a trivial exercise.
