(For UK market cars at least) this is predicted behaviour...Setting the shift lights "on" in the instrument cluster only works for the current "ignition on" session and resets when the ignition is switched off.
The shifts lights are a key dependant setting, if you set them "on" in the M key setting in idrive (not the same as setting them "on" for the M button) they should remain on for that key. The default setting is "off" for all keys. A software update usually resets all key settings to default.
