there may be some truth to this, but i'm not 100% convinced. I like being able to just dust off the snow, throw the cover in the trunk and be off. much easier than brushing the actual car off (also protects paint better as those brushes are way too harsh IMHO). I had it outside with the cover all last year, no problems. Paint had some swirls but I think that was just there from before I took ownership.

Also i once saw a cat SLEEPING ON MY CAR, LIKE IT OWNED THE THING. Cover paid for itself right there as far as i'm concerned.
