heh, it's my 3rd blue car in a row, and you're definitely right about that!
that's what it was in my 335i but the M3 for some reason removed that option. from the supplementary manual, page 35:

so instant readout seems to be gone altogether. maybe BMW wanted to save us the
instant pain we'd feel looking at the indicator not ever going over 15mpg
