Well I know there is a rod that is attached to the bottom of the pedal
When you press the pedal
The the rod is inserted deeper into the hole
Try to clean that rod
Because of there is any dirt on it,the movement won't be smooth
Maybe a spray some wd40 on a towel, and just lubricate the whole rod?

(apologies for obvious sexual references)
