Not a fanboy for either, but if I said the closed system comment to an apple guy, he would defend it with such ignorance and say apple this apple that..... I have the iPhone because it works great and does the job. Can an android phone do it better? Maybe. But I'm not that big into phones to look into the small things about who is better. Besides, apple got me good by investing in their ecosystem so it would be annoying to have to switch, ain't nobody got time for that!
There are benefits and cons of both. Your reason why you have an iPhone is a perfect example of the benefit of a closed system( if done correctly). Where with Android, it can be a horrible due to the skin the manufactures put on top of it.

Android being an open system can have users customize the UI extensively, etc.

Both iOS and Android are very good OS's and the phones they are installed on are also good. Both will do the job. It just comes down to personal preferences. For me, I am not all that big on customization, etc. I just want a phone that works and the iPhone/iOS is that phone for me.
