Castrol were able to keep their name on the dealer supplied 10W60 oil in part because BMW M engines were the only bulk user, so the formulation could be adjusted if necessary without conflict.
However the Shell 10W60 oil is already in use by Ferrari, so by rebranding it as a BMW oil it allows them to make an adjustment to the formulation if ever required.
Or maybe not - who knows.
