Geez, My first post and I'm weighing in on Porsches! (I pick up my 2010 335xi in two days!) I'm a Pcar guy too. I've had a 2006 Boxster and currently have a 2009 997.2 911. I would definitely go with the Porsche, but you need to drive both. As far as which 911-great deals on 996s to be had , but I would go for a 2004 only. Most of the 996 bugs worked out by then. 2006-2008 911s more desirable in my opinion. They just look more like classic 911's. Agree with above about RMS leaks and IMS problems but 997.1s still have both issues, albeit less frequently. IMS deleted in 997.2 engines (new in 2009).
The dreaded HPFP failures have been fairly common though in the 997.2s. I will probably have both cars die at the same time!
