No one here is debating crime rates. Whether it is at a "historic low" or not has not been questioned.

I will restate the first sentence in my previous post to say that human beings have as part of their nature a tendency towards doing things that are selfish and destructive. Not 100% of the time, but yes, human beings do bad things. Regardless of crime statistics; we all do bad things at one time or another in our lives.

Some people live in a world with no moral absolutes, meaning that they are the ultimate judge of right and wrong. So for them, if they think it is OK for them to do it, then no one else is in a position to judge them. I would bet that the perpetrators of violence of the OP were acting based on this type of world view.
