Just went from an E34 1993 M5 (with 216K on it) to a new M3. You are right. The E34 M5 straight six had a smoothness, lack of vibration and power in the upper revs that is not matched by the M3 and I miss it.
Also, I consistently got 19 mpg city/suburbs and 28 mpg highway in the E34 M5. Now with the M3, it is 15 mpg city/suburbs and 19 mpg highway. But the M3 is truly an awesome car nonethless. If I wanted fuel mileage in a four door sedan, I would have purchased a Ford Fusion Hybrid.
