I think it's great that Ford is bringing the Mustang to a whole new level. Same goes for GM with the Corvette.
That said, there is no way I would cross shop a Mustang with an M3. I doubt many Aston Martin or Maserati owners cross shop their cars with an M3, even though some of the "comparisons" might be close on paper.
Just today, I was driving with my gf (NOT a car enthusiast), and saw a beautiful silver Corvette convertible. I pointed it out to her, and all she had to say about it was that it screamed mid-life crisis. While she is not into cars at all, and could care less about it's performance, she does like the understated elegance of my space gray E92.
Ford could give the new Mustang 600HP and make it corner like it's on rails, but it's going to be a long time before Ford can build the reputation that BMW has built for their cars performance, quality, and luxury.
