good info thanks. the 997S was always a choice for me, they were just to much money at the time and i felt the M3 would be a better DD for me as well. maybe next time around seeing it looks like the new M3 won't be NA

0-60 is affected largely by A) a cars ability to launch, B) its traction off the line, and C) its tires (see B). 0-60 isnt really worth much these days.
As far as quarter mile, the 997.2S has faster ET's and trap speeds.
If you look at what a 997.2S does to an M3 on a track, or from a roll on race, its much faster. By your same caveat (0-60), you wouldnt expect a ZR1 to be much faster than either the 997S or M3, but thats not even close to the truth.
As speeds increase in a straight line race, the 997.2S will only pull away more and more. A base 997.2 with PDK will edge out the M3 to 150 mph by about 1 second (due to aerodynamics mostly), and its down 70 hp and some tq. That I would consider close, a drivers race. a 997.2S with PDK will hit 150 mph ~2.5-3 seconds faster than an M3. Roughly speaking, 3 seconds at 150 mph is 660 ft (~1/8 mile). This difference is not very close.

They are two very different cars in nearly every aspect. Looking at just power numbers alone doesnt tell the whole story. Look at the crank hp/weight, where the 997S comes in at 8.57 (3300 lbs/385 hp), compared to 8.7 for the M3 (3600 lbs/414 hp). And if you look even more at wheel hp they put down about the same hp to the wheels. So at wheel hp to weight, the 997S comes in at 9.7, and the M3 at 10.6.
