My current E46 is just 2 years old and is still turning heads. M has a lure which will always out-pace any 3's unless you like to be understated. I am not crazy about the E92 M3 yet, but I agree with some other's comments that when you see one on the road, the old one will instantly look dated however classic it may seem. Listen to your heart, go put your deposit if you want to be one of the first.
