OP. I think your best bet is to change the way you grip to a more standard over the top style. I just got back from a drive and had no problem keeping my elbow on the edge of the armrest and using an over the top method without moving my elbow. It's mostly wrist action (insert joke here). Maybe your forearms are a bit shorter also?
