Choose based on what your friends have and what games you want to play. Online play is 100x better when playing with friends you know so its worth choosing for that reason alone.

The new (well now 1 year old) Xbox slim has something like a 5% failure from the same problem that caused the RRoD in the past. Xbox live does usually go on sale for $40 and its worth every penny imo.
