I have been a full synthetic and change it every 5k mi guy in the past. I am leaning toward sticking with that but do also believe BMW knows something. They are, however, in a bit of a conflict of interest position as they have to pay for the maintenance for the first 50k mi so it is very much in their interest to minimize their costs associated with this. I think oil changes every 7500 unless tracked might be my compromise.
