For the most of my travels, not knowing what photographic opportunities may come my way, I take a full bevy of DSLR lenses and filters and my S95 with me, just to cover bases. If I expect to shoot some video, I bring my GoPro's and video cameras as well. All of this, properly packed, can fit in the backpack I have. It may weigh more than carry-on allowance, or even my check bag some times, but once you point out it's $10k worth of equipment and put the agent on blast for liability, they let you through no problems.
