you can change just the knob itself but you will have to cut the leather. That is what I did and wrapped the existing or even the new one with zip lock and/or velcro so the fit looks OEMish. The shorter/lower knob does make the shifter feel more solid and less rubbery.

It's a great mod and I think it's a no brainer. The shift knob for e36, e46 and e92 are almost identical (plus minus illumunation).
