I should have followed up on this... I switched to a lit ZHP knob, the wires were bunched up at the top of the knob and eventually shorted out over time as the insulation became torn from abrasion. The interior lighting circuit is not externally fused, but rather is controlled by an electrical module. That module "fries" itself after 5 circuit shorts. This didn't take long in my case.
I acted dumb and the dealer gave me a new OEM shift knob, replaced the module and recoded, took several hours. I was lucky.
