EDC is compatible with all springs. Some spring vendors may "certify" them as EDC ready but that is really not an issue.
I highly doubt that aftermarket companies (certainly not for some time) will release their own version of an EDC shock. EDC is a diverse and integrated system that ties into the larger DSC system. Unless BMW released a detailed guide on their specs (electronics, communications, etc) folks won't be able to make such shocks.
The real question IMO is this. Since EDC is customizeable by software wouldn't it make a lot more sense to offer more tuning options by a PC interface or more detailed idrive interface?
EDC largely eliminates the need for an aftermarket suspension for the car. That is unless you only drive on the track in which case you would probably be able to squeeze out a bit more performance from a coil over set up.
