Every year they come out with a map update. It updates nothing but your map data. No other software updates are provided with it. It's I would do it maybe every 2 years. Not too expensive. You can buy the official media from getbmwparts for like 40 bucks plus get the code from the guy here for like 50-60 bucks. Easy. The car does not need to be on whilst updating. You can safely shut off the car and resume the update later.

FSC codes are vin specific. No one's code will work on your car. It's best you contact sergej (i think that's the name). But if you have a retrofitted CIC you need the vin of the actually CIC and not your vehicles.

[edit] whoa if your cic has no vin it has to be a new one. YOu can load your specific vin onto it. I assume you're trying to get the navigation function working and not just loading the maps. In that case, you need the FSC code for navigation or a bypass unit as well as the FSC for the maps.
