This is correct. I don't think the car will lock itself if you just leave it. If you have comfort access, you must lightly swipe the door handle to lock the car.
OP, I never found a reason for the cover at first but now I have it, it's pretty useful. My last key got really banged up by being with other keys and what not. More importantly, I wear suits all the time and I don't like the pocket bulge so I don't have all my keys in my pocket. If I leave just the fob in my pocket, I feel like I might lose it. The cover is perfect for countering this.
