They never intended for it to be a replacement for the GTI. They just didn't think that it would sell very well in the United States beside the GTI, where hatchbacks (especially premium ones) are already a tough sell. In other words, VW of America didn't want two of their products to have to compete against each other in an already tough market. The decision to favor the GTI over the Scirocco indicates that the GTI is the more profitable of the two. But they have had enough feedback from VW enthusiasts begging them to bring the Scirocco back to the U.S. that Volkswagen has been reconsidering.

So if you'd like to see the Scirocco back in the U.S., let VW know!
