I had a 2002 M5 with a Nav similar to the '01 X5. It was a flip out screen (cassette behind it) with buttons left and right of the screen.
The original (2000) nav had a very small screen with all buttons to the right and exposed cassette.

The '02 Nav was OK but slooow. Full color but only 2D. The big down side was a Nav CD carrier in the trunk and 7 needed to cover the U.S. Only interstates were across all CDs. If you crossed certain state lines you had to switch the CD to see detail. I think it had POI's but not many at all. I think in 2003 they switched to a single DVD nav disk. It would have required a new head unit if I were to have upgraded. The good news, I actually think the system was easier to use than the original iDrive based nav.

You'll need to check the Navtek site for the most recent updates to the CDs. A whole set was $299, or $99 each IIRC.

You'll probably get more info on an E53 forum.
