you typically have to just grab the lips on the edge at the beginning to just get it going and then are able to stick the tool in further and the pads will slide out. of course the tool has to be thinner than the maximum available gap with the pistons completely compressed. typically you only have to get the pads barely moved to be able to remove them by hand. then you just stick the tool all the way in to compress all the pistons at once. some ABS systems do not like the brake fluid pushed backwards, so it is vehicle specific whether you push it back to the reservoir or open a caliper bleeder screw and push it out to a container.
