List price on the CX-9 AWD Grand Touring is under $40k. We got ours (with rear seat DVD, tow package, roof rails) for a steal 4 years ago, when gas was $4/gal and no one was buying big SUVs - we paid just over $30k...
My wife gets around 17 mpg around town, and we get low 20s on highway trips.
Make sure to find some curves to try out during your test drive.
