In principal Greg is right the length of the spacer, more joints, longer bolts, etc. all definitely add up to less strength. There can be no argument on this. Is it enough of a reduction to actually affect safety or increase the liklihood of failure - almost for sure not. However, like he said - there is clearly no substitute for doing things right; minimizing excess parts/weight/material and for having items built for your car.
