Well, with a lip, it does need to be in a box. Since yours is urethane, it doesn't need to be in as large of a box as if it were carbon/fiberglass since it won't crack if crushed.
I am in the process of shipping a diffuser that is 50"x10"x6" from LA to Miami and thats gonna cost me about $65.
