I was in the same boat as you about a year ago. I'm not going to tell the whole story, but in the end, I bought an E46 M3. I think it would be a safe car for a younger person if they are mature enough.
My dad would tell me the 5 and 6 series would be too big for me, and I agree. I would stick with the 3 series.
