In a pinch, eh? I'm not convinced that you yourself even believe that people are using these cars mostly "in a pinch".

It's not working for me.
An M3 can do anything a 318d can except the fuel efficiency, and that part boils down to operating costs which are in any case a fractional addition to the costs of buying the performance car instead of the entry level model to begin with.
At the gym, no amount of extra investment in the suit will allow it to be even remotely as functional as typical workout clothes. The suit simply cannot be used to workout in by any reasonable measure.

It's a poor idea. Maintenance, storage, upkeep, logistics and other reasons make this a nonstarter.
