That said, would an extra inch of diameter be that bad for the winter? Would the extra 1/2" on each edge cause any clipping? The clearance and extra cushion might be nice for the Boston winter.

The way the wheel well is set up, height does tend to be more of an issue than width for rubbing. It is tighter than I would want to go for a winter setup. Even if it doesn't rub, it would make you more prone to getting ice/snow chunks wedged up in between the tire and fender and getting rubbing on the snowpack.
