Pretty much a first world problem of sorts... how much damage am I doing to my engine? Temperature in the morning is about 40F.

I'm thinking of getting a bike or beater car. Think this is being paranoid? By the time I get to work (or home after work), the temp needle is only halfway between full cold and the optimal temp.
