I never really got into FF8. To me FF1, FF6 (3 in the US), and 7 where the top FF games.
I was lucky enough to get my hands on both FF1 for the NES and Phantasy Star for the SMS when I was a kid. These where the definitive console RPGs and pretty much all console RPGs are now modeled after them.
