I just traded up from an E90 335i (with Turbo controller) to an E92 M3 . I LOVED the 335, but it does not compare to the M3. The 335 actually feels lighter and more nimble at lower speeds / less aggressive driving, but when the driving gets a bit spirited, the M3 really shines! In terms of space... while the E90 is easier to get in and out of in the back, I find that both the E90 and E92 have about the same amount of space. In fact my golf clubs fit easier in the E92 trunk than they did in the E90 - I was surprised!!
Also - just moved from NJ to CA. Last winter SUCKED!!! I had to buy a dedicated set of winter wheels/tires for the 335 just to get around (BTW: wasn't bad in the snow with dedicated winter tires). North East - I would definitely get the X!!!
So...IMHO - for me, the E92 M3 would still win the day... get a dedicated set of tires for winter and you are good to go...
