A car doesn't need to be shifted manually to benefit from a DSG. Having driven a GTI with the DSG it's shifts are super-smooth both in auto and manual modes, making putting around town a breeze. Also, combine that with the fuel benefits of a manual, and you have a good combination for the 7-Series, IMO
