My first couple of drives in the M3 left me feeling the same, you really need a long test drive to settle into the car, they do lack initial shove as per the 335d and the 335i, but the cars more than just speed.
As mentioned already, try and get a decent test drive in one.

test drove an e92 M3 today with a view of px my e92 325i in for one. Although the car is fast, I wasn't as blown away as i thought I would be. only when i put the gear change on full speed and used the M3 did it feel really fast.
