Just to throw this in the mess, my family owned an 84 Mustang LX 5.0 for about 8 years. When we finally got rid of it, the engine had over 500,000 miles - NO BS. The tranny had been replaced once, and the body was rusting pretty bad in some places - hatch and a couple wheel wells and passenger door, but that 302 was still running and strong.
My Sister had an '87 LX 5.0. She sold in 2002 it to my friend with over 100,000 miles on it. He used it as the donor car for his Factory Five Cobra project. He's still running the Corba to this day using the same engine (block and crank), trans, (shortened) drive shaft, and rear end. He's since changed the intake, heads, and cam and I think the motor is now pumping on the order of 400HP. He's not had to touch the transmission nor rear end since he built the car.
