Another thing that you can do to help with shin splints, as per suggestion of my cross country coach:

Lay stomach down on your bed with your feet hanging off the edge of the mattress. Then curl your feet up to push into the mattress. After about a week or two, it should get better. Worked for me and a few others on the team.
