Springs alone are an affordable upgrade that "get the job done" if you want to tighten things up a bit and lower the car visually.
The downside is that they will wear your OEM shocks down faster compared to a paired spring+shock or coilover setup. This is probably what you experienced after extended use.
Ultimately, it's your choice. Some people do springs only and hope for the best as they don't plan to keep the car forever. Others get springs, then get shocks later when they fail. Still others want performance AND looks, and they get coil-overs, springs+shocks (like the Eibach pro kit or H&R cupkit), or just get coils.
It's your choice entirely, depending on your budget, preferences, and what you are trying to accomplish by putting on aftermarket springs!
