The figures do back it up - but unfortunately it's another of those industry standards that give a slightly misleading figure. You'll find these stats were measured in 4th gear. I agree the diesel will win, because it can ride it's wave of torque. But a petrol version could be in 2nd gear (30-50) and 2nd/3rd gear (50-70) which would allow it to use all its power to beat the diesel.
Still, the diesel makes it seem more effortless and gives a stonking mpg - I just needed to have the 6 cylinders and 7000rpm!
