I always find a family friend (they didn't have experience with animals before, but it's not too hard to learn). As mentioned before, the animal is more comfortable at home. I left my dog at a kennel once for a week and all he did was cry all week and he was hard to take care of. If the friend comes just once a day, stay for 15-20 minutes, the animal is much happier.
