I found no problem adapting from my '01 M3. I have the throttle in Sport as default. I have not noted any delay. I will delete the CDV at some point, but I think the impact is minor. You're right that 3rd gear is the sweet spot for many situations. Back road carving is 2-3-4 with most of the time in 3. You can also sownshift for 6-3 on the freeway for a quick spurt.
