Just finished "Stranger in a Stragne Land" by Robert Heinlein. Never knew what a social commentator he, or many other SciFi authors were. Last night I picked up another of his, The Cat who walked through walls" but my son pointed to the Stephen Baxter book Manifold:Space so I started with that.
On the SciFi/social commentary issue, I guess the free form construct of SciFi lets them have more room to propose radical alternatives.
