I'm also thinking the bearing wear might be related to how long the car sits between drives. My car never sits more than 12 hours unless it's parked at the airport. There's always a residual film of oil on my bearings.
I was looking at the bearings from a small steam turbine the other day. I noticed that only one segment showed wear. It was the segment on bottom where the shaft sits when when not in use.
