You know, I'm a little surprised by MPOWER's story of his class. I guess I shouldn't be, but I am. Living in Canada, its quite a bit harder to own a pistol (rifles / shotguns are easier), so I sort of assumed that with the greater ease of owning and practicing with a pistol, that Americans would just know a little more / be more proficient with clearing, firing and general safety.
But honestly, it doesn't sound much better than it is here in Canada (and its a joke over here to be honest). I went through my firearms course and like MPOWER, I spent most of my time picking out the people in the class who had absolutely no business owning a firearm - what scares me most is that all of these people passed. In no small part, that was due to the instructor stating "This question will be on the exam - the answer is 'xxxx'".
But one induhvidual in particular in the class (blonde, probably about 27, fit stereotype perfectly around being dumb as a post, ok body...no, no pics) had a number of questions during the class. None of them were very good. One of them started out with "So I was reading in U.K. Cosmo that...." As she started out with that, I'm sitting in front, but she's directly behind me - I'm stifling my laughter, but I'm pretty sure she saw my shoulders shaking...anyhow, to complete the question (which wasn't much of a question), she just wanted to let everyone know that she found a very pretty pink handgun in UK Cosmo and wanted to make sure she'd be able to buy it after attending this class.
Another induhvidual (who honestly looked like he just got out of prison) was quite concerned with knowing exactly how much information he needed to provide to police if pulled over and basically at what point he could tell them to bite it.
In summary, my classmates were clueless, and I'm very afraid knowing that they all now have a right to purchase handguns.
My only comfort is that I bet most of them will move at one point in their life, and given I don't think the majority of them are capable of more than three intelligent thoughts in their lifetime, they probably won't notify our chief firearms officer / office (yes, we have one) in advance prior to moving and then as soon as they move without notifying the CFO in advance, the police will show up on their doorstep in the next week or so and collect their firearms from them, never to be issued back to them.
