I work in the car business as well as a salesman. The Dodge dealership I'm at is fairly small/medium. Income is decent, I make about $60k, better than what I made in the Army as an E5.
Advice? Sell yourself, then the product. People like to buy from people they like.
The hours are long, but the job itself is pretty fun, if you're competitive. The income shoots up as soon as you do anything managerial, but that may take awhile, depending on where you're at.
