BMW made the switch to 10w-60 back when the S54 rod bearings in the E46 M3 starting failing and they didn't know why. Prior to that, //M cars came with synthetic 5w-30. I used to regularly switch between 5w30 and 15w-50 depending on the season.

Technically you shouldn't use anything but 10w-60 but your car probably isnt' going to explode into a million pieces if you use something different.
