To see if it was, I checked the Wikipedia entry for BYD. I was greeted with this gem:
BYD Auto is an automobile manufacturer based in Shengzheng, China. The firm is China's largest mobil phone battery maker. in 2003, it bought a bankrupting government auto maker "Qingchuan" to acquire tightly controlled permission to make automobile in China. This method of permit aquairing is called "buy a shell" has since been banned.
It inherite one model called "Flyer" from Qingchuan, as of today(2007), Flyer only Sell less than 100 per month. It's first self designed model, F3, however, is very successful, selling over 10000 per month in first half of 2007.
In addition to F3, it also unveiled new models F3R, F6, F8, F1. But one thing distinguish this auto maker from all the others is in its pursuit of Electric Vehecle. it has unveiled F3e, which is the Electric version of its popular F3, claim to have a cruse range of 350 kilometers on a single charge. it plan to have Electric versions of all its models as well as plugin versions. in addition to EV, it also produce EV charge station, car betteries specifically designed for EV application.
