Ok so I just learned something. It looks like the law in NJ was changed in 2005 which makes the lessor and not the leasing company responsible for the tax. In most states the leasing company is responsible for paying the tax then passes it on to the lessor as a portion on the monthly payment. Now in NJ the lessor is directly responsible. That is why you had to pay up front. I do not have experience with this issue but I don't see how you can recover the tax. Is there any way to pass those amounts on to the party assuming the lease?
