IMO video games help a bit to get to know an unknown track. So you know which kind of corners to expect at a given point of the track.
I found it useful to get to know the Nürburgring a bit, where you have blind corners, corners after bumps (even jumps if you're fast enough
). Helps to avoid bad surprises.
